Overview

Start at Hohenwerfen Castle above the Salzach valley: ride the castle lift, join the castle tour and watch eagles and falcons fly low over the meadow in the 11:15 falconry show. Then head up to Eisriesenwelt, the world's largest ice-cave system, by shuttle, cable car and footpath for the official cave tour. On the way home, stroll for an hour through the old salt town of Hallein.

Good to know

• Eisriesenwelt normally opens from May to October. In October the castle is closed on Mondays, so the tour does not run on Mondays then.
• The Eisriesenwelt ice cave is closed in winter (November to April).
• Hohenwerfen Castle is closed on Mondays in October.
• Inside the ice cave it is about 0 °C and the visit involves about 700 steps: bring a warm jacket and closed shoes.
• The cave is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
• The cave tour is led by the official Eisriesenwelt staff; your guide waits nearby.
• If Hohenwerfen Castle is closed, you receive a full refund.
